The Book Thief

Liesel lived to be an old woman. Death says that he would like to tell the book thief about beauty and brutality, but those are things she had already lived. How does her life represent beauty in the wake of brutality? Use test examples to support your answer. Make sure you respond to another group member's post.

  1. Leisel experienced this in several ways. She experienced buety from trying to get Frau Herman to come before the bombs went off. "If you don't come, I'll stop coming to read to you, and that means you've lost your only friend." But she experienced brutality by being to late to save Rudy and Mama and Papa. She went nauseous after being bombed and woke up to see Rudy and her fathers accordian case.

  2. Liesel experienced brutality when her brother died on the train. I imagine that it was a very tough thing for Liesel to have to endure. "The girl, however, stayed. Her knees entered the ground. Her moment had arrived. In disbelief, she started to dig. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't-" page 23.
Liesel was able to experience beauty when she was trying to get Frau Holtzapfel to leave her house to go with everybody to the "Air- Raid House"....like Brandon said. Although Frau had just found out that her son had died, that doesn't mean she can't grieve for her son in front of everybody else!!!! Oh well....

  3. Leisel first experienced brutality at the age of 9. Leisel mother had to send her children to a foster home because she wasn't able to pay for food and shelter. On the way, Leisel's brother died after her serious fit of coughing. Liesel had watched this with one eye open, the other in adream. Death know's this more mthan anybody. In the conclusin, Leisel's street was bombed, causing everyone who lived on the street to perish. she was the only on to survive because she was in the basement of the Hubberman's, her foster parent's, house. She was reading one of her beloved, stolen books. Leisel also experienced brutality when she saw the jews being pushed by soldiers up the street in a parade. It must have been extremely painful to watch such a harsh, horrilble thing to be done to such innocent people. Max, the jew that she and her temperary parents had homed in their basement, bwas once among these people. It must have been even worse to see someone you knew and loved. During all of this, and the war, Leisel represented beauty in the way that she found good thing's within the bad. She made herself enjoy life in the worst of time's.

  4. I totally agree with Brynn.
First of all, Liesel was probably devastated when she found out that Max had left. She had been shocked when she saw her brother dead on the floor of the train. Her mother had to give her childeren to Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Liesel's foster parents, because she was not able to pay for their food and shelter.
All I would add is that when Liesel met Rudy and became best friends was beauty. But, when he died, that was brutality. That was the part that made me cry.(I have never cried while reading a book, but this book just broke my record!!).

  5. I agree with Alyssa. Frau Herman had just found out the one of her sons was dead. She didn't want to leave the air-raid house because she was greiving. Leisel tried her hardest to get her out but she wouldn't come. This agrivated the mayor. "You'll still have one son left" Leisel said to her.

  6. As Brandon said Liesel has experenced brutaity in a lot of ways, each of them simmaler though. One was when her brother passed away on the train, and she then had to separate from her mother. Another way is that after her father gave a jew some bread Max had to leave for there saftey and his saftey. One last way is that she was not there to save Rudy, wich broke her heart.I think Rudy's death took so much of her because as it said in the book " Rudy was the only thing that kept her sane."Wich means Rudy was a big part of her life and she really did like him.

  7. I also agree with Brynn because it is true, she did have bad luck and brutilaty from a really early age. After her brothers death everything did go down hill exept for certant moments. Another reason I agree with Brynn because it is very unfortanent that she was the only one to survive, wich did not happen to most people back then, even when bombs came down by the thousands. In conclusion I completely agree with Brynn for those reasons.

  8. I think that Liesel experienced both in many ways. She experienced brutality when she saw her foster parents dead. She probably was completely dazed. I wouldn't believe it if I were her. Liesel experienced beauty when she was with Max in the basement with the snowman. she made a joyful momment for them both. She really knows how to express the good and bad sides of her life. Though probably more often of the bad. Death is correct when he said this.

  9. I agree with Marah. Liesel really did make good things out of all the bad things that happened during this painful time of World War 2. Marah, I really like how you mentioned the time when Liesel brought the snow into the basement, because it really shows how much Max helped her realize the beauty in the brutality. Brynn
