Chains

Mr. Robert collects Isabel and Ruth on the day of Miss Mary's funeral. Why aren't the girls allowed to take personal items with them? Explain the symbolism of the seeds that Isabel hides in her pockets.

  1. The seeds were the only memory of Isabel's mother she would ever get to keep. Isabel can't take personal items because that is the way it went with slaves. If the seeds Isabel had brought had been found, she could have been accused of stealing and could have been murdered because she had stolen and was a slave girl. They could have cared less if a white male stole a bag of flour. The seeds are such a big part in Isabel's life and she plants them. If the plant contains seeds, I bet Isabel will take them and plant those and start a cycle of planting and taking the seeds.

  2. To start with Mr.Roberts is a terrible person and very rude to Isabel. But the reason they can only take a blanket with them is because they are going to be sold to a diffrent person. Mr.Robert wants them to be easy and convincing to sell them. He also does not want them selling there possibly valubule personal belongings for a money to escape. The seeds represent Isabel and Ruth's mother, who had recently passed away. The seeds Isabel picked from the jar were the only piece of home left, and the only thing of their mother left. The seeds showed Isabel that her mother and her home would be with her every step of the way.

  3. I made the connection for the seeds that they were like the lotus flower in the read aloud book. I think they don't want them to bring personal item's because they don't want them to remember anything. Also, women didn't have as much rights as men.

  4. I think that the seeds play an important part in the story because the seeds are like the last bit of home they have. Without the seeds their hope of freedom would be dashed. Ruth and Isabel need hope of freedom because without it they would no longer have the will to live. Mr.Robert sold them for his own wealth. People were really greedy back then (and some still are today).

  5. I thought that the seeds were important because it was kind of like she was saying, "You can try all you like, but you'll never take away the hope inside me." And even though they will continue to try, mentally Isabel would always continue to stand tall. I agree with Jack in the the fact that women didn't have the same rights as men and if you were to live back then all togeather life would be very hard.

  6. Isabel brings the seeds as something to remember her mother by, plus once she plants them no one is likely to notice. No one can notice if the seeds are tucked in her pocket. The seeds show that her mother will always be with her and Ruth.
