I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for my undergrad. I have a Masters in Elementary Education from Regis.
I come from a family with four kids. My sister is a teacher in Chicago. One of my brothers lives here and the other one lives in Chicago. I moved here because my husband loved Colorado and I loved him. As it turns out,I love Colorado as well.
Okay, I said from the beginning that this story was different. When the narrator is "Death" things are going to be unique. What do you think of "Death?" Is he good or evil? Use examples from the text to support your answer.
I think that Death is a good person. He may have some bad qualities to him, but I assume he is a good "person." On page 3, Death says," Please trust me. I most definetly can be cheerful. Agreeable. Affable. And thats only the A's. Just don't ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me." I think that even though Death says that he is not nice, he can still be a good person. Mabey later in the book he becomes nice. Also, he cares for Liesel. That to me is bieng nice. I'm not sure if he actually likes Liesel, but he took the time to notice her and watch her story. Furthermore, the travels the world picking up the souls of dead people. If he doesn't do that, souls will never live another life. He is not evil because he just doesn't have that type of personality. If he were to be evil, he would not hae the job he has now. If he did have that job, he would not take care of the work he does. If someone died, he might leave thier soul or disrupt the way that it works. In conclusion Death is a generally nice "person" in many ways.
I think that Death is a good person for the most part. He probably has some bad traits inside him but everyone does. He most likely hates the job he has to do, so he may be grumpy or just plain mean but he needs some cheer inside him. Maybe that is why he is telling the story of Liesel. Who knows though? The story may be sad in the end, you never know. On page 3 it says,”Please trust me. I most certainly can be cheerful. I can be amiable. Agreeable. Affable. And that’s only with the A’s.” Death is certainly an interesting person. Maybe later on in the story he becomes happier and starts caring. You know that he is concerned for Liesel, otherwise he wouldn’t be telling the story about her. Death has an ugly job and an even uglier self esteem. You know from the VERY beginning on page three where it says, “Just don’t ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me.” Death is nice! He cares for Liesel and her brother. Plus, he doesn’t like that awful job that he has. In description, on page 4 it says,” I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. You soul will be in my arms. A color will be perched on my shoulder. I will carry you gently away.” Death is a fascinating person with many unanswered questions about him. Is there more than one Death? What does Death do with the soul after he carries it away? Where does he live? What does he look like? I wonder if the author, Markus Zusak, knows the answers? If he does, would he give them to his readers? Nell
In my opinion, Death is kinda like Severus Snape, bad feelings just boiling up into a hate cesspool. He is really a good guy, though. The difference is instead of just liking Slytherins, he likes everybody. Death probably hates his job, like Hades, yet knows he has to do it. I would hate my job if it were his. I mean, collecting dead bodies day after day after day must get tiring and depressing. I think he says “Just don’t ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me.” on page 3 so that he can keep up the "Grim Reaper" reputation.
Death loves to tell stories but i wonder why he chose to tell the story if Liesel and her foster parents? Why not some other German family in Germany in the holocaust? Why did Markus Zusak write about Liesel? Death is a nice "person", he is just misunderstood.
I don't have anything against Death, but I don’t think Death is always the perfect character. He is not necessarily the best character. I mean, he tries to be the good guy and tries to express himself that way, but he is not always that way. He is kind and tries to be kind to the mourners of the dead, but I don’t think he is always like that, I think he wants to think that he is a kind. On page 13 he says that he would like to kneel down to the book thief and feel for her but it isn’t allowed. So I guess I really don’t have an answer, at times he can be good but at others he isn’t the best person.
I assume Death is a nuetral person/thing. He can have feelings and be reasonable. He says this on page 3 "I most definitely can be cheerful. I can amible. agrreable. affable." He can also be evil because of his job. he also says " Nice has nothing to with me." on the same page. -Flakey McFlakey
I think that death isn't really good or evil. I mean one minute he's talking about affection and the next he's talking about death and despair. Death has no feelings, in my case, you have to have feelings about something in order to be good or evil. Death is also a very absurd character/narrator. According to page 31 "***a strange word***kommunist." This just proves my point even more.-trout a.k.a Connor
