Chains due 1/13

Mr. Robert collects Isabel and Ruth on the day of Miss Mary's funeral. Why aren't the girls allowed to take personal items with them? Explain the symbolism of the seeds that Isabel hides in her pockets.

  1. The girls are not allowed to bring their personal items because they are slaves. They do not have freedom. Even though they were slaves before, Miss Mary Finch gave them more freedom. Both of them are upset about it too. Every night Ruth would ask where her baby was. Isabel says that that bad, bad man took it. She feels horrible that Ruth is upset.

The symbolisms of the seeds are home. She wants just something to take with her. If I were being taken away from home forever, I would want to take something with me, even if it is was rocks or a piece of string. On pg.13 it states “I looked around in our small room, searching for a tiny piece of home I could hide in my pocket. What to take? Seeds." This shows how desperate she was for anything, even though she didn't know what it would grow into. I predict that at the end of the book, she will plant the seeds.

  2. Mr.Robert collects isabel and ruth and tells them theyre not allwed to take personal belongings because it reminds them of how they could be free and freedom. the symbolism of the seeds is home. it reminds them of their mom, and how they were allowed to do things, and freedom. the seeds are isabel's confidence. isabel took them to help her get by.

  3. The way I see it, Mr.Robert won't let them take memories because he doesn't care about them. Also because owners think they're very unimportant, and they treat slaves like dirt. Once they're sold, nothing is theirs. When Isabel has her memory, it explains how they were once sold. At the start of chapter 3, page 13, it says; "We couldn't take Momma's shells, nor Ruth's baby doll made of flannel bits and calico, nor the wooden bowl Papa made for me. Nothing belonged to us." If I were a slave owner, (which I'd never be, not in a million years) I'd let them at least take a small memory. If I were a slave, (which I hope to never be) then I would do whatever I could to take a small memory of home. I can't imagine what it would be like to have no parents, no freedom, or nothing to remember home by! I would be so miserable...

  4. I agree with Tabitha. I totally think she will plant the seeds. I also think that something bad happens to Ruth or Isabel.

  5. When Mr. Robert took Isabell and Ruth away they weren't allowed to take any of thier personal items. This is because slaves weren't valued. Therefore, most of the things they own aren't vallued. Mr. Robert only took thier blankets and shoes because it would bring them a higher price. Since they were going to leave their home forever and couldn't bring anything, she wanted to bring something small that she could hide and not get in trouble for, so she snatched some seeds. "I looked around our small room, searching for a tiny piece of home I could hide in my pocket. What to take? Seeds." (pg. 13) The seeds symbolized and helped her remember her mom and her home.

  6. Isabel and Ruth are not allowed to bring their personal items because he thinks it would trigger their desire for freedom. They do not get to speak up or have their own choices. The seeds are important because it is the only thing that they could bring from their mother. "I looked around our small room, searching for a tiny piece of home I could hide in my pocket. What to take? Seeds." [pg.13]It would give Isabel confidence and gives her the feeling that one day she could be free.

  7. I think that the seeds ate important because her mother had them when she was alive. She took them so that she would have some part of her mother when she got sold. She has the seeds so she can still contact her mom because her gost can not cross the water. I think that she will keep them with her at all times now that her moms gost is not able to protect her.

  8. The girls are not allowed to take any personal items because it would remind them of their old life. Their life of freedom. The items would remind them of Miss Mary Finch's house, where they were still slaves, but she gave them more freedom.

The symbolism of the seeds are of their passed-away mother and their free life. "On the hearth stood a jar of flower seed that Momma had collected, seeds she never had a chance to out into the ground."(pages 14-15)The seeds would keep her happy and safe.

  9. I think the girls are not allowed to take any of there personal items with them because it would give them hope, perseverance, and it would give them some feeling of freedom. I mean would you want a slave that has a feeling of hope that someone would save them and there lives would be safe and happy? Obviously you would say yes, yes, and yes, but put yourself in Mr. Roberts’s shoes. Maybe he is secretly doing them some good, by telling them from this family you can escape faster with no hard feelings from the kind waitress. Maybe he knows something.

The seeds are definitely significant because of two main reasons. The first reason is that they are obviously the only memory of her home, her father, and her mother. It would be one of the only things that kept me sane. I would carry them around with me everywhere just in case I would never see my belongings again. The second reason I think the seeds are vital to the story is because I think she will have to sacrifice them for something else she cares a lot about, like Ruth or a love interest that comes into the story like the kid in the red hat.
