Forge due 1/13

Valley Forge wasn't a battlefield. Instead, it was a winter encampment for Washington's army. What types of personal battles did the soldiers endure at Valley Forge? Why is Valley Forge considered the turning point in the American Revolution?

  1. Valley Forge is considered the turning point in the American Revolution because instead of a battle with weapons, it was more of a battle of wills. The Americans were trying to prove that they could withstand the British. It was the winter time and they stayed to prove that they could win the war. The soldiers endured battles against illnesses and starvation. Their clothes were torn and there was not much comfort.

Valley Forge was named after an iron forge. Because of the fact it was more of an encampment than a battlefield there was not much fighting. Curzon was a slave, but was still fighting.

  2. Valley Forge was very important from 1777-1778. The soldiers faced many struggles, such as famine, harsh cold, and long, exhausting marches. The battle was of skill and wit, and was a very bloody. Each troop devised plans for attack, ones that could catch their enemies off guard. The Washington army was at an encampment in the White Marsh Area, but with the coming winter, they chose to move to Valley Forge, which was 18 miles Northwest of Philadelphia.

Valley Forge was the turning point in the American Revolution because it was not like any other war. Not really a battle field, but a place to win or lose. Everyone fought for something, from freedom, to victory. But it was also an enormous risk to take. Hence, this quote, “A large piece of ice floated down the river as the second truth crackled in me. This freedom could kill us.” (pg.5)

  3. Soldiers endured many types of personal battles at Valley Forge. They were struggling with famine, fighting the cold, and most importantly, they were fighting for America’s freedom and their own survival! Valley Forge was also a place for the soldiers to understand that they were (most of the time) fighting on their own will. They were willing to do what others couldn’t bear to tolerate. The Patriots were trying to show the British that they didn’t want to be controlled. In fact, they wanted to be independent! The soldiers fought illnesses and they could handle sleeping in the remains of their mud-covered, tattered clothes. Valley Forge is considered the turning point in the American Revolution for various reasons. This is the place that wasn’t really a battlefield, but at the same time, it was. Valley Forge is where the United States of America’s army fought for their right... just like Curzon’s mini battle. He wanted to e free. He wanted all slaves to be free. At the same time, he knew the consequences.... “This freedom could kill us.” Page 5
