The Book Thief Reading Reflections

Okay, I said from the beginning that this story was different. When the narrator is "Death" things are going to be unique. What do you think of "Death?" Is he good or evil? Use examples from the text to support your answer. In addition, once you have posted your reflection, you must respond to another group member's post. In total, this will be worth five points.

  1. My emppresion of death is that he is a careing and humorous charachter. In the book there is a sentence that says "I walked in, loosened his soul, and carried it gently away." This supports how he takes time for others and gives them his kindness in the hardest of times.

  2. I think Death is good and bad because it hasn't hinted anything that makes him good or bad. "I most definitely can be cheerful. Just don't ask me to be nice". I amagine Death looking evil but he could be good or evil. He seems grouchy but not exactly evil.

  3. I agree with Jack because, Death does hint that he could be a bit fisty and upset. But I think he gets grouchy beacause what is happening around him and it upsets him that he is blind. When he talks you can tell some of his anger is mixed whith his houmor. That is why I agree with Jack.

  4. I think that "Death" is okay.... since he's Death I think that everybody just assumes that he's a bad guy!!! Although he does have a bad job:
"It was exactly when I knelt down and extracted his soul, holding it limply in my swollen arms." page 21

  5. I think death is a sarcastic and volunteering person who is like us all: good and bad. " you will get to know me soon enough," introduction.

  6. I agree with Jack, he's good and bad, because there's no actual evidence of his being bad. I mean, he's sort of like us all, angry, funny, and happy.

  7. I do not think Death is a bad guy, but he explains things in dark ways. He is a good guy, not a very nice one though. After all, just look at his name. "Just don't ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me." Death is obviously a good story teller. When he tells Leisels' story, it's almost as if he knows it better than she does.

  8. I agree with Alyssa's coment. Death is certainly not the best of people, but not the worst either. Although he has a bad reputation because of his job. I think death is pretty cool, but his job is pretty crazy.

  9. I think deaths personality is a little off. It is sarcastic, humorus and it is not always serious about its job. But it still seems dark. Ansewring the question straight foward, I don't think death is either. I mean, it comes to us all in the end, right? It is like the dabate in our group about Death being female or male. It is still jovial at times like us, but he has his bad days, too. Brynn

  10. I agree with Atticus about death. He is good and bad. Nobody, not even Death, can be only bad. I also like how Atticus said that Death was a sarcstic person. Death is exactly that! Brynnie
