Breadwinner Reflection

Parvana has a completely different life that you. What are some of the more substantial differences? Use examples from the text to support your answer. In addition, once you have posted your reflection, you must respond to another group member's post. In total, this will be worth five points.

  1. Parvana's life is way different than ours for an example it says in the book that Parvana has to carry a water bucket six times back and fourth to the towns water spicket to fill up their water tank, we never do that! it also says that the tank is kept in the lavatory that also holds their stove. That is why her life is different than ours.

  2. I think that her life is different than ours because they have to walk every where and walk for miles just to get water. Another one is they can’t have things like pig, lobster, photographs, movies, TV, computers and many other things. Lastly they get bombed allot and the houses are very small.

  3. I agree with Erik because that is crazy that they keep their water and stove in their bathroom.

  4. First, the Taliban enforces "anti modern" rules. No photographs, nor books. "Some were English books about history and literature. They were kept hidden because the Taliban burned books they didn't like."(The Breadwinner, pg.32)Another difference is the inequal rights of woman and men. "Women were not allowed to go into the shops. Men were supposed to do all the shopping, but if women did it,they had to stand outside and call in for what they needed." (The Breadwinner, pg.54)Like Eric said they also had to do more labor to get what they needed. There are so many, and I could go on for hours, but I'll leave it at that.

  5. I agree with Cameron because they do have to walk for miles everywhere just to get water. Its pretty shocking people are doing that right now.

  6. I guess it would stink living in Afganastan.
You'd have to boil your water before you could drink it! I'd hate drinking hot water. I feel sorry for the Afgans.

"What are you doing?" Nooria asked Parvana as she filled a cup from the tank. "You know it has to be boiled first!" -pg 61

  7. No TV, movies, games. What would life be like in Afghanistan? This book tells you what happens. You can't go outside if your a woman without a man. Why would someone want to live in Afghanistan? I love playing soccer outside and running around.

  8. I agree with Cameron. I would not walk about walk a mile for a bucket of water!!! I jusy cannot believe this is really happening right now. It's crazy!! "Unboiled water made you sick, but Parvana was so thirsty that she didn't care. She wanted to drink, and and raised the cup to her lips."

  10. I agree with Cameron, Camilla, and Erik. Why would you go miles for water, and lug a bucketful miles back. And so many things aren't allowed, such as:
Lobster, pig, pork, chess and anything which showcases the joy of music.
I love playing soccer too. In one Afghan city, the former soccer field is now a place for public execution!
Just having a one or two room apartment would be bad enough if you have a family the size of Parvana's (5)

  11. Parvana's life is different from mine because they are not allowed to have any entertainment, such as TV, computer, video games, or even phones. It is also different from mine because her culture is strictly vegetarian, and I often eat pork, chicken, beef, etc.

  12. Parvana's life is different from mine because they can't have daily things we use like phones, computers, television, and video games. They can't even have stuffed animals! Next, the women can't go out without a man or a note allowing them to go out. If women even want to shop, they would have to go outside and call for what they wanted "Women were not allowed to shop. Men were supposed to do all the shopping, but if women wanted to do it they had to stand outside and call in for what they needed." page54 -Tabitha

  13. I agree with Cameron, Camilla, Erik and Oscar. In our life, we can get water from the kitchen sink. But they have to walk miles to get theirs! The only reason I didn't talk about the lobster, pork and pig is because I'm a vegetarian. -Tabitha
