This is my response to the blog question. Manjiro has to experience many cultural differences in America. He was horrified at the thought that Catherine was going to kiss him in public, because a man and a woman shouldn’t show affection in public in japan. The Japanese boy was puzzled that Catherine’s friends were laughing that he wanted to marry her. He thought it was strange that his friends were so violent. Manjiro had a very different sense of beauty than all his friends, because Manjiro said that the most beautiful thing he had seen was a right whale and Terry said that Catherine wouldn’t like being compared to a whale. Those are some of the cultural differences Manjiro had to go through.

One of the cultural differences that Manjiro experiences is that nobody bows in America. Another one is that Manjiro can ask as many questions as he wants as said here."Stop apologizing for asking Questions!" the captain said. "How are you going to learn if you don't ask things?Ask all the Questions you like to whomever you like." The last thing is that the Americans don't pay respect to the fish and whales they kill. The fisherman in Japan never took fish without remembering to leave great offerings at shrines.

ReplyDeleteHe has to face that it is allowed to kiss in public. He is frightened by just the thought of kissing. No one bows in America. He might wonder why. The sailors only use the oil for the ship. In previous chapters, he wants to know why also. He is free to wear and say whatever he wants at any time. The sailors don’t give thanks to their fish and whales like they do in Japan. They don’t have shrines and don’t wear the same clothes.

Manjiro has noticed many cultural differences. One difference is that the Japanese bow when they meet and the Americans do not. Another example is that the Japanese eat using chopsticks and the sailors eat using metal utensils with pointy ends. A third example is the Japanese are born into a trade based on their family while the Americans can choose what they want to become. Lastly, the sailors waist most of the whales they kill compared to the Japanese who use the entire whale and give thanks for each whale they kill.

When coming to America, Manjiro has to face many cultural differences. First, unlike in Japan, Americans don't express gratitude for their food's past life. The Americans eat with forks and knives. Manjiro thinks eating like this is peculiar. He is used to not asking questions because it is impolite. In America, you can ask as many questions as you like. Those are only some of the cultural differences Manjiro faces when he moves to America.
