I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for my undergrad. I have a Masters in Elementary Education from Regis.
I come from a family with four kids. My sister is a teacher in Chicago. One of my brothers lives here and the other one lives in Chicago. I moved here because my husband loved Colorado and I loved him. As it turns out,I love Colorado as well.
The American Revolution was about freedom and liberty. Isabel has lived her entire life in bondage, but dreams of freedom. What does freedom look like in Isabel's mind?
Isabel has lived her entire life in bondage, and all along, someone has been giving her orders and punishing her severely if she didn't complete them. Therefore, the freedom in Isabel's mind would be exactly the opposite, where no one is giving harsh demands and she could do whatever she wanted. The only way she could achieve that would be by running away, and that would increase the feeling of having something done, and the future (to her) would be a wide horizon full of chances and dreams waiting for her, with no chains binding her to slavery.
In the American Revolution the main reason for the war was fighting for freedom and liberty. In the book,Isabel has been a slave almost all her life, living in the country. She is then sold and taken to New York. Freedom to Isabel now means finding her little sister and then going back to Rhode Island where they came from, so they can be free and happy. That is what freedom means to Isabel.
In the fantastic novel CHAINS, Isabel has lived her life in a true bondage, being told what to do and being punished by a "owner" who takes joy in ordering her servants around. Freedom has always seemed to her as wonderful, because it means escaping the life of ownership like the one she has known. Isabel feels that freedom is true liberty, something to fight for. In her mind, it means rescuing Ruth, living like a person, and no longer being a slave, bedridden and overworked. Isabel realizes what Madam wants from her is nothing but work. She wants the freedom to be herself. In the book, Isabel has a dream that the British soldiers of the American Revolution would buy her freedom in her work. But to her astonishment, they turn her down, only because they found she was a runaway from a family of Tories, and no matter how brutal that family had been to her, they only took slaves brought about by Patriots. Isabel realizes that she will have to take the precious matter of freedom into her own hands, that is if she wanted to find her sister. To Isabel, freedom will brighten her horizon along with her dreams.
To Isabel freedom means alot. the book is called chains which tells me that she wants it and needs it very badly. She wants to be able to breath and not have to worry about what she has to do. Freedom to her means being together with her sister and being calm and steady for ounce. She wants to be happy. Freedom to her is so far away, she feels the need to reach it. marah
I think that to Isabel, freedom not only means not being "owned" by someone, but the freedom to make her own choices and do what she wants. She seems to have TONS of dreams, but keeps them all bottled up inside her like the seeds in the jar. I think she does that since her "owner" enjoys punishing her for every little act of freedom she makes. When she allows the little seeds to grow, I think her want, NEED, for freedom will flourish. With Locktons wife on her all the time about every little microscopic thing, she doesn't have room to be who she is and do what she wants. By becoming a spy and passing info on, this little act of rebellion to her, ummm.... I don't know, "slaveism"?, is showing that she now needs freedom as much as food or water or air. I think that if she reaches for freedom just a little bit harder, she will have the ability to make that happen.
