The Breadwinner

Why do you think Shauzia talks so much about France? Do you think her dreams are realistic? Use text examples to support your answer. This is worth five points.

  1. I think its because she thinks that people over there have small nothing to worry about problems but shes wrong. Shauzia's dreams are not realistic to just save that little amount a day she wouldn't have enough. If she did make it there how is she gonna make it out there she would have wasted all her money and she cant get a job. I dont think she could survive there shes better off in Afganistan.

  3. Shauzia speaks much of France because France seems like a wonderful new world where everything is war free, at least in her perspective. Shauzia has adream of going to France because in every picture she has seen of France everyone is smiling and the world is not gloomy. (pg 125-126) Shauzia would like to go to France for more then just that reason, she would like to leave her family who argues all the time and she wants to leave before she starts 'growing'.

  5. Shauzia's dreams are probably not going to come true because it costs a lot of money for a plane ticket (about $500 from Afghanistan to France).
She would also have to pay for baggage, which would be about $1000 if she was moving all her stuff. Then she probably could not bear being without Parvana. They couldn't go together, but Shauzia seems to think they can.(“Do you want to come with me? We can look after each other” [pg 128]), but they cannot.

  7. It's kind of like a personal heaven to her. She talks about how everthing is always happy in France. "People in France have bad days too, but I don't think they can be very bad," acoording to page 126. She's probably has never heard about the catacombs. I guess that she can put that on the not to do list. Connor

  8. Shauzia talks so much about France because she is completely obsessed with it. She thinks that it is a happy land according to p. 126 “In every picture I’ve seen of France, the sun is shining, people are smiling, and flowers are blooming. France people must have their bad days, too, but I don’t think their bad days can be very bad, not bad like here. In one picture I saw a whole field of flowers. That’s where I want to go. I want to sit down in the middle of it, and not think about anything.” Of course Parvana thinks this is completely crazy but Shauzia keeps holding onto this thought. She loves the idea of France. And of course she probably is completely determined to get out of the violent, dreadful, appalling land that she is living in now, especially because she lives in a house where everyone is grumpy. She is so happy to get out of the run down house she is living in everyday which she does by dressing up like a boy. She obviously doesn’t like her situation and grumpy family as it states on p. 127. Parvana said “and what about your family” Shauzia had answered “I can’t help that!” The dream leads her on and keeps her going.
I think these dreams might actually be realistic, if they dig bones and get as much money as they did before every day they might actually get enough money to go to France. It would change the entire storyline if they go to France. I think it’s likely though and I also think that is what the sequel might be about.
    I love this book!
