Holes

Life in Camp Green Lake is difficult to say the least. What is a typical day like? How does Stanley survive in such harsh conditions? Use examples from the text to support your answer.

  1. The typical ady at camp green lake is well you wake up at 4:30 every morning and you hear mr. sir saying this isn't girlscouts anymore. Then you go to the breakfast hall and they serve you some glop in a can. after you go outside and you grab a shovel and mr. sir marks a boot heel mark on the ground and tells you were to dig the hole then you start your hole. after awhile the water truck comes and mr. sir or mr. pendanski. Also if you find somethg intresting you could get the day off. Like on page 52 when he found afossil but the warden did not like it . ISAAC

  2. A typical day at camp green lake does not consist of a variety of exercises. In fact, it is very straight forward. They wake up at 4:30 in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day and work for many hours to dig holes as wide and as deep as their shovel. “The shovels were five feet long, from the tip of the steel blade to the end of the wooden shaft.” pg. 27
Stanley survives these harsh conditions because he figures that if he just keeps working that the time will go faster and one day it will all be over. He just goes with the flow and thinks that maybe if he does, someone will realize that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. As he works his hands grew stronger and he didn’t get as many blisters. “His blisters ripped open to form new blisters. He tried to adjust his grip on the shovel to avoid the pain.” He kept working hard, and I guess he had a pretty good strategy because eventually it really did pay off.
Also during a typical day at Camp Green Lake Mr. Sir or Mr. Pendanski comes driving the water truck. When Stanley caused Mr. Sir a long rattle snake venom scratch Mr. Sir would just pour all of his water out on the ground so that Stanley did not get any.

  3. A typical day in Camp Green Lake is waking up at 4:30 in the morning so that you can try to avoid digging in the hottest part of the day. Before you start to dig, you have to eat lukewarm cereal. (“For breakfast they’d been served some kind of lukewarm cereal.” Page 26) When you’re finished, Mr. Sir would tell you where to dig. Then you get to start digging! Your hole would have to be as deep and as wide as your shovel which is five feet. (“Stanley’s hole would have to be as deep as his shovel, and he’d have to be able lay the shovel flat across the bottom in any direction.” page 27) When you are all finished, you have to spit in your hole. If you find anything interesting, tell Mr. Sir or Mr. Pendanski, depending on who is driving the water truck.
Stanley survives in such harsh conditions mainly because his body just naturally adjusts to his new “home”. On his first day, he wasn’t really prepared. (“He had blisters on every one of his fingers and one in the center of each palm.” Page 32) Near the end of his stay at Camp Green Lake, Stanley had already adjusted quite well to Camp Green Lake’s harsh condition.

  4. A typical day at Camp Green Lake starts off with waking up at 4:30. Then you would line up for breakfast and start digging immediately. If you don’t start early you will probably have to deal with the afternoon when the sun is at its hottest. After you dig your hole you must spit in it (as on page 37). Once you have done that you will return to ether the wreck room(page 43) or the tent.
Stanley survives because of repetition. Like the blisters on his hands hurt, but he gets used to it and all the other weird traditions at Camp Green Lake.
