The Mysterious Benedict Society

Why is the "Emergency" so important? How does it affect the story? Use examples from the test to support your answer. This is worth five points.

  1. The Emergency is important to the story because it is kind of like the current economy. Page 98 states," The missing aren't missing, they're only departed, all minds keep all thoughts- so like gold- closely guarded..." This means for the people who don't realize that the messages are in their mind to keep listening to the words from the Sender. Mr. Curtain gets power from the messages, plus more people to work for him.

  2. The emergancy is important because it gets Mr.Curtain power, and it's the main current event in the book. It's effecting people's minds and sending them a message. In the book, a messanger spoke these words; "The missing aren't missing, they're departed. All minds keep all thoughts-so like gold-closely guarded..." Somehow, the messangers have effected people's minds so they will go under their control and think everything is totally normal, and the Secret Benedict Society can deflect the word's powers so they are the only ones who can stop the people from doing this anymore. 3. The emergency is very impoarant because the sender Mr.Curtian is using the mesangers to send the messages through the radio waves. the sender uses children becausen as it says on page 100-101, "A devilish trick," said Mr. Benedict," and a necessary one. You see, only a child's thoughts can be slipped into the mind so secretly. For some reason, they go unnoticed."

  4. The "Emergency" is the whole reason they need the kids. They are creating the emergency at The Learnig Insitute for the Very Enlightened. They are using kids to secretly transfer messages to people's minds. The reason Mr. Benedict thinks something is going to happen is because a messgae about people going missing ( which people actualy did). According to pg 98 " The missing aren't missing they're only departed.
All minds keep all thoughts- so like gold- closely gaurded..."

  5. The big "Emergency" is the reason The Mysterious Benedict Society was formed. Mr. Bendict, Rhonda, and Number Two set up the tests to get help from the children. The Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened set up a mind control thing where kids are captured and used to send messages. One of the messages is,"The missing aren't missing, They're only departed. All minds keep all thoughts-so like gold-closely guarded...." page 98

  6. The emergency is important because it is the headline news every day. "The newspaper that morning had been filled the usual headlines, several of them devoted to what was commonly called the Emergency: Things had gotten desperately out of control, the headlines reported: the school systems, the budget, the polution, the crime, the weather...why everything in fact, was a complete mess, and citizens everywhere were clamoring for a major - no a dramatic - improvement in government."(p.2,3) It's the big problem in the economy. It's also important because Mr. Curtain is creating the emergency. The sender is sending the messages along with the emergency to mess up people's brains so they will work for him.

  7. The Emergency is important because the messages are connecting to the lessons they are learning.
("Always leave the T.v. on") pg-98
They want the T.V. on because you can hear the messages when the T.V. is on, like when Mr. Benedict showed them on pgs 96/97/98!
