  1. max and liesel share many features, but many differences. max is a jew but protected by liesels dad. liesel is not a jew, so she doesnt need to be protected. they share a special relationship that cannot be broken. the book that max gave liesel sealed their relationship, like an envlope. by max gave liesel purpose it meansthat liesel didnt know what to do with her life or who to spend it with. when max wrote that book, he told her many things about himself, like people stood over him and he liked to fight. in the text, in the end of the max's book it said" on her birthday she gave a gift to me". this was their first hug, which helped their special relationship go along. i think max is very important.

  2. Max and Liesel have many things in common and have many differences. First, Max is a Jew and has to be hidden in a basement. He got into more fights than Liesel did. Liesel is not a Jew, and she can feel free to walk out almost any time. However, even is Max got into more fights, Liesel usually stands up for herself like he did. They both share the same fear, dreams. They share the secret that he's there and they have a signifigant friendship. When Max gives the book "The Standover man" to Liesel, she thought it was perfect. The signifigant thing about the book is that they've both had things taken away from them and formed a new life.It also shows that he's friends with Liesel in a certain way. Liesel was able to show him how not to be afraid. In the end of the book, it says how he's not afraid of dieing anymore. "It makes me understand that the best standover man I've ever known is not a man at all..." [pg. 235] That is why I think The Standover Man is signifigant.

  3. Max and Liesel are very alike, but yet, very different.
    *Max is a jew
    *Liesle is a german
*They both have no real family aside from Mama and Papa
    *They both hate hitler

on page 205, it says; 'There was a recital of murmmered names. A checklist. Isaac. Aunt Ruth. Sarah. Mama. walter. Hitler. Family, friend, enemy.'
For Leisle, it was when she blured out "I hate Hitler!" After she stole a boof from the fire.

The Standover Man is about a 'bird' or man always being told what do do. He was afraid of men standing over him. On the first page of this short book Max wrote, "All my life, been scared of men standiing over me." I feel sorry for him, because it's true! Men, like Hitler and his army of Nazis, stood over him all his life! Max has a sad, sad life, and I feel sorry for him.

  4. "Now I think we are friends, this girl and me" Maxs' story is so sad, while Liesels' is not as sad. They have both lost something big, Liesel all her family execept Rosa and Papa, while Max everything. Maxs' life gives Liesels' a purpose because it gives her something to care about and some way to fight Hitler. She sees what he's done to people. The Standover Man is telling the story of his life and in some ways, hers. Liesel partly understands what Max feels, but only because her brother died and then she was left at a strange house. She made some friends but shes still new to the town.

  5. At first, Max Vandenburg has a pretty good life. As a kid, he always was fighting other kids. On page 187 Death narrates,"Max Vandenburg was born in 1916. He grew up in Stuttgart. When he was younger, he grew to love nothing more than a good fistfight." Now, Rosa and Hans are giving him a place to stay; at their house. Before this, he was staying in a
camp to keep the Jewish. They gave nearly no food and water and beat him. Liesel Meminger is living with her foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann. Hans gives her a great life and teaches her to read. Rosa beats her with a wooden spoon when she does not listen. Her brother died on a train on the way to te Foster house. At this point in the book, Liesel's life is much better.

Max has a very similer life to Liesel's. They both have lost everything. They give eachother purpose to try to live. They just have so mush in common.

When he gives Liesel "The Standover Man", it helps Liesel know Max better. It is like a story telling of both their lives. It connects them. Liesel and Max are the same and different at the same time.

  6. Max's life gives Liesel purpose by giving her a very big, important secret. It gives her something to hug and love. "On her birthday, it was she who gave a gift- to me." (pg. 205, or 12 of the "Standover Man") It also gives her reliefe from Mama's fury. The "Standover Man" is significant because it tells that Max has been afraid of many men who stood over him but this time it's not even a man. It's Liesel, a friend.

  7. Liesel and Max have lots in common, yet lots different because of a plethora of reasons. First, the similarities. Both Max and Liese; came to the same house on Himmel Street. They came to this house on a train too. They both have nightmares about their past. They get in fights with people. Next, the differences. There are the obvious ones, Max is Jewish and Liesel is German. Max is a boy and Liesel is a girl. But the other ones are that Max is extremely thankful to be in the Hhuberman household, but Liesel is not.

Max's life gives Liesel a purpose because she has someone to connect to and help. It must feel good to be helpng a Jew.

The significance of "The Standover Man" is Max and Liesel becoming friends. He ripped out pages of the book that saved his life to make a present for Liesel. He was taking extreme risks to make the girl happy.

  8. I think that Max and Liesel have a similar life in the way Max lost his family and so did Liesel. They also found mama and papa and that is how they came together. Liesel is German but Max is Jewish. I think that Max’s life gives Liesel a purpose because she can relate to him and count on him to be there, “Liesel swallowed …. And she walked over and hugged him for the first time. “Thanks Max.” unquote. I think that the stand over man tells about Max’s life and how Liesel affected it. Max and Liesel would make a good fighting team. :) Liesel NEED eachother.

  9. Max and Leisel are completely different and also alike at the same time. They both hate Hitler, but Max is in danger of being tortured by him, Liesel is fine. This is because Max is Jewish, and Liesel is Christian. Also, Liesel was put at the Huberman house to be safe, while Max had to run there.
Max gives Liesle some one to lean on. Liesle has to protect Max, and Max kind of protects Liesle as well. She helps him feel better and become more healthy.
The significance of "The Standover Man" is that it confirms that Max and Liesle are friends. Max was always afraid of people standing over him, exept this time, Liesle is the one standing over him. "On her birthay, it was she who gave a gift to me."(pg. 205) In return, he gave her the book.

  10. I think max is similar to Leisel in many ways. Their lives are so similar and at the same time there also like water and fire. Max has lived most of his life in a closet being fed food once a week if he is lucky. Leisel is fed three times a day. She doesn’t get seconds but her belly is somewhat full. Max also has lived his life unappreciated and shunned by others because he was Jewish. Leisel was ignorant of being unappreciated and living a life of sadness. There are many ways that they are the same also of course. They both had their family taken away from them causing them to move to another place. They both have terrible dreams that cause them to wake up screaming. And lastly they both are kind and thoughtful. I think the story that max gives Leisel for her birthday is significant because it tells her his life story, how others looked him, how he felt about himself, and what he did when he was her age. That is why I think Leisel and max are similar. sam
