I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for my undergrad. I have a Masters in Elementary Education from Regis.
I come from a family with four kids. My sister is a teacher in Chicago. One of my brothers lives here and the other one lives in Chicago. I moved here because my husband loved Colorado and I loved him. As it turns out,I love Colorado as well.
Right away, Phoebe tells us that Mick isn't here anymore. What did you think as you read the first page? Did you like knowing right away that this is a serious story? Would you have rather found out without the warning?
I think that it was a shocking thing once you get to know Mick later in the story so you get more sad about towards the instead of stopping and sad at the end it's sad as it reaches the end. Unlike an ordinary book. I think it was good to know right away if it's a serious story because at first I thought the book thief was a jolly story until you learn about that it's about the holocaust. Well I mean the warning you kind of get the warning of him just dying. The thing I would like a warning for was how he died with the truck/bike accident I mean that was the most suprising part.
Right away, I was kind of sad. I wasn't sobbing though. I also knew that this was going to be one of the sad types of books. I would have liked it better if the author would told it in Phoebe's perspective the night of Mick's accident. Phoebe kind of tells you but, she tells you that Mick died. I guess it actually warns you of what happens later on in the book. It reminds me of "The Book Thief" because of the foreshadowing that takes place. Surprisingly, I would've liked to found out without warning. I mean, that's just the way I like books.... Alyssa
When Phoebe tells us right away that Mick isn't here anymore, it makes me sort of mad. I think she should have let us find out, instead of telling us right away. She should have given text clues that made you know that he was dead. It started at what should have been the end, “It was a bike accident. His tire just hit a rock. And he skidded into the back of a passing truck. And that was it.” But still, the style of writing she uses to describe his death is really interesting. She gets right to the point but draws the end out so that you want to read on. It makes you want to see how she reacts, and how you would react if you were in her place. Knowing Mick is dead is a blow, like you just got hit by a wave, but it makes you wonder why she decided to say it in that particular way. Marah
I think it is trying to say staight out what the main idea is and the author just wants to focus on how and what happaned. I thought that this is just going to be sad as i read the page. I knew it was just going to describe what happened on his death. I dont think it would have worked for the story to say at the end what happened because the author would not describe his death soon enough. I like that this is serios because it is realistic and i like that. I also like books that arent serious because thay are funny and gooofy. I think this book will just be about how she and Mick are related and how she reacts showing that people dont sometimes reveal their secrets and feelings. Glenn
I think that knowing that it was the kind of book that is very sad and serious did kind of lose my interest a bit but since the way it was written I still enjoyed it because starting off putting the saddest part of the book (so far)on the front page of the book is a warmer welcome than it should be since I thought the sad was over. I also enjoyed the warning so you know to “brace” for it unlike the boy in the striped pajamas where you need to look for context. Ronin
