Anne Frank due 4/22

How do you feel about the fact that Anne’s diary was published considering the numerous very personal passages and harsh criticisms of people who later died? Otto Frank originally edited the diary to remove such sensitive portions. Do you think these sections should be edited out or that the diary as a whole should be available? In addition, do you think the book would be as popular of Anne's life had ended differently?

  1. I think that it is good and bad that Anne’s diary was published, thus containing the very numerous personal passages and harsh criticisms of people who later died. It is good, because the diary is much more whole if these sections are included. You get the whole sense of how Anne felt, criticized, and lived stuck in the stuffy attic that they were cooped up in for so long. You wouldn’t understand as much, if these segments were not incorporated into the complete work of art that Anne has written in times of hardship, and adversity. She complains about the adults, which many people might consider rude. For example, on page 215 it says, “Mrs. Van Daan was in such a bad mood this morning, nothing but complaints! First, there’s her cold, and she can’t get any lozenges, and so much nose blowing is unendurable. Next, it’s that the sun’s not shining, that the invasion doesn’t come, that we can’t look out the windows, etc. etc.” Certain people may not want to include this, because it is disrespectful.

It is bad that Anne’s diary was published, with many passages and criticisms, because it cannot always be good to know exactly Anne’s feelings, despite what you learn from them. Otto Frank originally edited the diary to remove such sensitive portions. I think that the diary is more whole if these parts are inside, because you know how to react to certain events that occur, and you are more connected to Anne as she goes through what she is experiencing.

If Anne’s life had ended differently, I don’t think the book would be as popular. After all, the diary would have been picked up by Anne after she was freed from the camp, and would have been just like all the other diaries of young girls and their experiences. Because Anne’s life was cut short it makes the diary just that more amazing, tragically, and strangely. The diary might be famous now, since it is from the holocaust, but it would not be as well known as it is now if Anne’s life had ended differently. I keep thinking that if I was born in a different time period that I could have the same experiences as Anne Frank. I can’t even imagine it.

  2. I think that it is perfectly fine that Anne's diary was published with all the crude remarks about other people. This is because I think that everybody doesn't like something another person does. That is exactly what Anne does. It is just part of life.
I also believe that it depends on which person is reading the diary. if it However, if the person is lder, there is usually no reason to edit parts out.
If Anne's life had ended differently, (let's say that she lived), she most lilkely wouldn't have let anybody read it. But, since she didn't live, we were able to read her diary.

  3. I think that it was a good thing to publish Anne's diary because you can get a feel of living in the "Secret Annex," and living during the Holocaust. People love her diary and so many people have read it. You can feel like a teenage girl living in a horrible time.
I think it was a good thing to publish Anne's personal thoughts and criticisms. Despite the weird parts, I think that everything would've been boring if you couldn't read the parts about Mrs. Van Daan. On page 215 it says, “Mrs. Van Daan was in such a bad mood this morning, nothing but complaints! First, there’s her cold, and she can’t get any lozenges, and so much nose blowing is unendurable." This if funny (at least to me) and you wouldn't quite know how the other members of the Annex acted like. This diary should stay original. What I mean by that is that it should have every word that Anne says in the diary.
I think the diary wouldn't have been as popular if she lived. The ending would have been all happy. The sad part is what I think it is famous for. On the other hand, we might not have been able to read her diary if she lived. She would keep it esoteric and no one would've known about it.

  4. Anne's diary is fine the way it is. Without the certain scened later scenes would not have made sense. For example, on pages 130-133 Anne talks of her likings for Peter. If you read further you would not have understood "the dream" or Petel. Without some of the personal scenes it would not be a book, muchless a diary. Anne's diary would not be as popular if Anne survived. Anne would just be one of the many jews that survived. Most people would have questioned Anne herself. Annes's father would never have given it to his friends and it wouldn't have been published. Anne's diary would have been more like a normal girls
