- I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for my undergrad. I have a Masters in Elementary Education from Regis. I come from a family with four kids. My sister is a teacher in Chicago. One of my brothers lives here and the other one lives in Chicago. I moved here because my husband loved Colorado and I loved him. As it turns out,I love Colorado as well.
I do not think there is an alek, and everything in this is much more advanced than anything in World War I. The "besties" and "clankers" are much more advaced than even some modern things in real life. this causes me to believe that not much of levitan is parellel to the true begining besides thefact that many leaders parents could be poisened and put in the same situation as "alek" minus the walker part.

The beginning of Leviathan is parallel to world war one because the world is at war. It's just how they fight the war that is different. instead of machine guns and ditch fighting, everyone's either fighting using a beastie or a clanker. I'm not quite sure if there was an Alek. Even though he was a prince he seemed a little scared to climb into the walker. As stated on page 11, " of course we cannot force you , your Serene Highness." Despite Alek's fear, he still climbed into the walker.

I think that this story is exactly like world war two except instead of fighter jets you have beasties and instead of plain old machines you have the clankers with their strange controllable robots. Also their were different monarchy’s competing against each other. They also are as Tabitha said a lot more advanced than regular World War II. This would be like fighting on mars compared to the technology we had back then.
ReplyDeleteThe Leviathan World is so much different than our world. During their war they had genetically engineered animals and marvelous machines to fight with. In our war, we used guns and cannons, which weren’t effective. They were the same because they were both big wars with a lot of countries. There wasn’t an Alek in World War 1.

No, I don't think there was an Alek. But- the beginning of the book is similar to WWI because a duke was shot, which cause a war. I think the war in Leviathan started because Alek has many enemies, who could have murdered is parents to get some sort of revenge. Alek had to flee, to keep safe. '"Were to sneak out, Your Highness!" Otto whispered.' -pg 6

There was no Alek in WW1, but Leviathan and The war itself are alot alike. For example, France, Russia and Britan were one army, and Germany, Turkey and Austria were the other. Basicly, the Allies are the Darwinists and the Central Powers are the Clankers. Also, the Archduke was murdered in the early war.

The beginning of Leviathan plays out with WW1. The war was started with archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Princess Sophie, being assassinated. Alek's parents(Sophie and the archduke of Austria)were killed by assassins. On page 44, Count Volger says, "Serb schoolboys harldy older than you, first with bombs and then with pistols. Both times they failed. Then last night a feast was given in your father's honor, and he was toasted for his bravery. But poison took your parents in the night."

I do not think there was really an Aleksander. I think Scott Westerfeld just added him for more excitement, and it worked!

Leviathan and the real WWI are basically the same story, only Leviathan is steampunk. In other words, there were no Stormwalkers in 1917, and there isn't now. WWI really did start out with an archduke getting killed, however the only kids he had were girls. I think Scott Westerfeld just included Alek to spice up the plot. The armies re similar, too. The Clankers included Russia, Britian, and France, being the Allies. The Darwinists included Austria, Germany, and Turkey, the Central powers.
ReplyDeleteThere is also something different. On page 44, Count Volger told Alek that "poison took them in the night." However, in the real WWI, the archduke was shot.
