I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for my undergrad. I have a Masters in Elementary Education from Regis.
I come from a family with four kids. My sister is a teacher in Chicago. One of my brothers lives here and the other one lives in Chicago. I moved here because my husband loved Colorado and I loved him. As it turns out,I love Colorado as well.
Mr. Robert collects Isabel and Ruth on the day of Miss Mary's funeral. Why aren't the girls allowed to take personal items with them? Explain the symbolism of the seeds that Isabel hides in her pockets.
I think that the reason for Isabel taking a few belongings is that she wants a memory of her family and past life. Mr. Robert probably doesn't want her to take anything because it would make her emotional and she would not be easy to sell as a slave. The belongings were her only attachment to her life before.
The seeds that Isabel hide in her pocket symbolize the seeds that Momma had collected and put in a jar. The girls could not take personal items with them because they could get split up from each other. Isabel thought if that happened, who wouldd take care of her.
The girls are not allowed to take personal items with them because once Miss Mary died those items were no longer theirs but, Mr. Roberts things because he owned Isabel and Ruth. The seeds that Isabel slipped in her pocket were what she called "a tiny peice of home" (Page 13) the symbolism of the seeds is she will leave to New York but, she will never be away from home. So she can always stay with her home. No matter where she goes. Isaac
Mr. Robert takes Isabel and Ruth when Miss Mary dies. The girls are not allowed to take any personal items with them because nothing belonged to them, but Isabel did take something with her:seeds. Momma had collected the seeds, and she never got to plant in the ground. I think that Mr. Robert didn't want Isabel and Ruth to take their stuff is for three reasons. One: Isabel and Ruth's belongings now belonged to Miss Mary. Two: Isabel and Ruth would have to carry their belongings all day long as they did chores. Three: Maybe Mr. Robert was ordered to tell Isabel and Ruth to not take any of their stuff with them. 'I looked around our small room, searching for a small piece of home I could hide in my pocket. What to take? Seeds.' page 13, Chapter 3. ~Elena
I believe that the girls are not to take anything because Mr. Robert believes that since he inherited the girls he owns them and all they own is his. Although he does not allow them to keep anything Isabel can’t give up all her old life and memory so she takes the seed to symbolize her old life so she won’t forget. I also think that when she plants the seed in the garden it symbolizes her old life is growing and going to be hers in a matter of moments now that she helped the rebellion and now that freedom is near.
