I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for my undergrad. I have a Masters in Elementary Education from Regis.
I come from a family with four kids. My sister is a teacher in Chicago. One of my brothers lives here and the other one lives in Chicago. I moved here because my husband loved Colorado and I loved him. As it turns out,I love Colorado as well.
The American Revolution was about freedom and liberty. Isabel has lived her entire life in bondage, but dreams of freedom. What does freedom look like in Isabel's mind?
I think freedom in Isabel's perspective is living with her family in a place where they're not slaves. I think Isabel doesn’t need her mother or father but, someone that she does need is Ruth just like in page 135 when she scares Madam up the stairs and Madam smashes the painting on her head. I think another aspect of freedom in her mind is where she is because she hates being in the middle of the war but, at her old farm she felt great because it wasn’t so busy and all that stuff it was just plain out nicer down there. In Isabel's mind, she thinks of freedom as a major thing. She thinks it is the biggest thing in the world to have. She figures that once she gets the power to have freedom, she will be able to find ruth. I think she not only wants freedom for herself but also for the world.
For Isabel, freedom looks like a fortune. "We would get proper cabins on the ship, I was sure of it. No more riding in the hold with barrels of salt cod. Ruth and me would have a cabin fit for ladies, with bunks and blankets and three meals every day. Yes, indeed, that was my future." Page 69. Isabel wants that to be her future. A perfect cabin, three meals per day and no chores or ladies bossing her around. Yes, that may be the future for Isabel and her little sister Ruth, if the rebels arrive.
Freedom looks like Isabels final destination. Her entire goal, maybe even as large as her life goal, is to be free from a cruel master. She wants to be free with her sister, finaly escape the hard memmories and scars that slavery left her with. Isabel is trapped, trapped... Freedom is the only escape.
I think Isabel thinks of freedom as being with Ruth and not being controlled by anybody. As Isabel says on page 69 “I watched the gate, waiting for the rebels to arrive and arrest the Locktons and reward me with our liberty. We would be given proper cabins on the ship. No more riding in the hold with barrels of salt cod. I was sure of it.”
Then fact that Isabel is a slave makes me think that her freedom would be like the world we are in now however, there are many aspects of this world that are not free. But the parts that she would see as free would be that there is absolutely no slavery and everybody is treated fairly equally (most of the time). So her version of freedom will never be however, no ones version of freedom will happen. Ronin
