Leviathan due 4/15

Westerfeld describes the nature of steampunk as “blending future and past.” For example,"Leviathan" combines future technology with the history of 1914. So what are your thoughts on the steampunk genre? Why do you think it’s becoming so popular?

  1. Steampunk is an interesting genre that combimes the thrills of sci-fi and historical fiction. I like to read both historical fiction and sci-fi, so this new genre is a nice combo for readers like me. I also like the fact that this new genre can relate to two worlds. I think that steampunk is becoming so popular because fans of both historical fiction and sci-fi will love this genre. For example in Leviathan it presents both sci-fi and historical fiction.

  2. Steampunk is my favorite genre. Like Connor said, it combines sci-fi and historical fiction. Historical fiction used to be a little boring, but when mixed with sci-fi, it turns the genre itno something completely new. It made an entire world of sci-fi that is historical. Many people will love the genre because it mixes two of the most famous genres. Leviathan does exactly that, and I love it.

  3. I think steampunk is popular because of the fact of past being made sci-fi. Take something like the Civil War, then put in some death-lasers and alien. More interesting, right. That is exactly why I like steampunk. It turns a small battle in the 1780’s to a massacre with killer alien-demons. A great battle that draws the reader in. That is why I like the genre steampunk.

  4. I think that the steampunk genre is so popular because it has something for people who love historical fiction and science fiction. It is very interesting to read this book and see the connections to what really happened. It sets up an already interesting topic for the author, then they add in other exciting events by adding in fiction. It has the thrills of odd monsters and machines from modern (or beyond modern) times, yet, the seriousness of war. One example of a serious decision Alek had to make about whether to help the Darwinists is on pg. 228 where he says "We can't sit here and watch them die, Count. Enemies or not." It has something for everyone, history lovers or sci-fi cravers.

  5. I think that steampunk is an amazing genre of writing. It captivates readers to be able to think about fantasy, history, and future. It helps people think about everything at once. Scott Westerfeld described it absolutely perfectly, and his book is a blend of future of past. He thinks of his audience of kids. he included everything a child would want. Robot's, mysterious beasts, war, and fantasy. He helps teach us about the war in a more interesting way. he includes animal based robots, genetically engineered animals, and two kids that are in wrong places at wrong times. steampunk is an amazing genre that teaches us in a more fun way.

  7. I think that steampunk became a popular writing style because it appealed to different readers. I like the steampunk because of the modern appeal but my mom might like it because of the history in the book. I really like the style of the author

  8. I think steampunk appeals to many readers for many reasons. I know I want to read sci fi, I know my dad wants to read historical fiction. By combining the two, Leviathan, and other steampunk
novels sell big, for kids and adults. Plus, the interesting concept of combining sci fi and historical fiction hooks readers somehow. I think steampunk is a genre to be proud of.
